IPad and Photos?

I like the feature in iPads photo album that tells you from a geo standpoint where the photos were taken. This only seems to apply to a small handful of my photos... What triggers this and if it's something specific in a camera what "feature" do I look for in a new camera purchase to make sure I have this?
