iPad Apps to iPhone

My wife and I each own an iPod and share an iPad I.

If I replace both our mobile phones with iPhones can any purchased Apps for the iPad be transfered to the iphones or will they need to be re-purchased.

If they are universal apps you can run them on your iPhone and download them free of charge.
