iPad backup corrupt

I am trying to help a neighbour with an iPad problem.

Apple telephone support talked us through backing the iPad data to a laptop, which we did.

Upon "restore" the 18gb file fails around 3 minutes from the end and gives a "file is corrupt" message.

Telephone support offered no help. Visited Apple Genius at their Leeds store. Changed iPad operating system and ran again. Same result. Store say that they can help no further.

We have a large file which appears to have a problem

Can anyone please suggest what we might do next. Perhaps suggest who we can get to look at the file. Apple just don't want to do anything

Have you tried another Genius Bar appointment with another Genius to help you? Not all Apple employees are created equal.

Have you tried making a new backup of the iPad and trying the restore again. If the first backup was corrupt, a newly created backup may work.
