Hi guys, was just wondering how the ipad is for students writing long essays?

I want to switch to the ipad from my laptop as it would be easier to take with me to pracs and lectueres ect.

if i brought the keyboard to make it easier would this be quite simple?

cheers, jemmabelle

I use the Apple wireless keyboard for lots of typing as I am slightly unreliable using the onscreen keyboard.

If loud and clear enough I wonder how good Dragon Dictation would be for lectures, it's fantastic when close up, unbelievably reliable.

I know of someone who wrote a book on an iPad with Bluetooth keyboard so even pretty long essays should be a snap.

But it uses the internet, and will only record for about a minute before it stops and sends what it has off for processing.

I didn't realise it uses the Internet, every time I use this forum I learn just how little I really know!

Just a quick follow-up. Yesterday I sat down to do some more-or-less serious writing for the first time using my iPad + Zaggmate. Wonderful. 2,000+ words just flowed. When I needed to look something up it was right there - thank you, Google! - and it felt completely natural. The app I was using, Writer (monospaced font, lots of whitespace, easy navigation), made concentrating on my writing very easy. Now if there were only a Word compatible WP that handle tracking changes....

Maybe at the early age of 29 I'm already a dinosaur, but I really can't understand how one can effectively take notes from lectures or university frontal lessons with a notebook or an iPad...

My notes used to be all non linear and schematic... A word processor would be too restrictive for effectively capturing stream of thoughts or unrelated ideas...

Sent from my 64GB 3G iPad using iPF
