Hi, I have been a practising designer for more than 20 years. I became an academic in 2003 and taught in a design college in Shanghai. In 2010, I returned to my design root and started conceptualing an ‘audio box’ for the iPad. Utilising the craftsmanship of the Chinese, I re-purposed an ordinary leatherette jewel-box into an innovative multi-purpose storage and bluetooth audio device. I attached a photo of my prototype for comments or questions :)

Hi Rod,

Interesting design. Not sure what problem you're trying to solve, as it looks a little bulky. The iPad is notoriously thin, so that would seem to be a better goal.

iPad Jewel Box with Audio - Why?

Hi Piko,

Thks:)) Good question:)
One drawback of the iPad is the low audio volume which is suitable only for use in quiet areas. If you want room-filled sound or enjoy your Youtube with friends, you will need to add separate devices to pump up the volume. My 6W volume is adequate. The other key issue is its portability together with the extra sound device. This is now integrated. Some parents are also wary of buying the iPad for their kids, as they are afraid that they may accidentally drop the metallic ‘saucer’. The box also provide protection and cover. The light, handcrafted box has a stable form factor which allows it to be placed anywhere easily - bathroom, workshop, kitchen, etc. It can also be held now like a book. The last issue was the audio cabling and power supply which can be bothersome and unsightly. It has a detachable, rechargeable Li-ion battery. I designed the Jewel Box to try and overcome the above issues so that we can have an extended and creative use of the iPad with its wide array of fantastic multimedia applications available in the marketplace today. I am just wondering how else can this device be used conveniently and effectively ?

Is there anybody interested in containing their iPad 1 in a leatherette box for a different display and protection? Once encased inside, it looks like a stylish portable mini TV with the controls unblocked. I have done few pieces left and I am prepared to give them away at below cost. Let me know if interested.
