Is there a way to extend the time the backlight stays on....it seems to go out very quickly.

There sure is!

Go to your Settings app and press on the line titled "General." Then, on the right side, look for and press the line titled "Autolock." You will then see a range of times (from 2 minutes to Never) that you can select.

Hopefully, that sorts it for you. If not, holler back.
