iPad only plays through speakers, not through headphones

Hi! My iPad 2 suddenly stopped supporting the audio out feature, which is dissappinting because now I can't play my iPad through separate speakers or use headphones, etc. I'm pretty sure the audio jack isn't broken, though, because the iPad responds to the remote and mic controls on the Apple earphones when they're plugged in, it just won't play through the earphones. Instead, it plays through the iPad's built in speakers. Is there any way I can fix this problem without taking it into the Apple store?
