iPF Noob
I want to use my iPad away from home. I'm told that my HTC wildfire phone acts as a router. Is that right? would an iPhone 3GB be a better option?

Hi and welcome to the Forum!
I'm not sure about your HTC have a look in its settings to see if it has a Personal Hotspot tab. An iPhone will work but I believe it has to be a 3GS or higher model. Someone else may chime in who knows more.
