ipad safari url window

I need to be able to edit a url that is in the safari's url window. In particular, I need to be able to scroll back through a long url and insert characters at the beginning. I need, in other words, to be able to do what would be done with the arrow keys on a full keyboard. How does one do that?

hold your finger down next to the URL until the magnifying glass appears and then move your finger left until you are at the beginning.

If that is too small an area for you to work with, copy the whole URL and paste into the notes app.

Edit it and then copy/paste into the Safari window.

Yeah just hold your finger on the URL until the magnifier pops up
