iPad update rage!

Hi,

I'm so pleased to have discovered this forum, hope I may get some answers. I've had my iPad for just over a year and lately, getting updates has proved a major pain - I'm currently running 4.3.3, bought an app which should
have worked on this version, only to be told I need to update ... but I can't because each time (whether I try for a simple update or a reset) I get told the connection has timed out. I know this is wrong and that the Internet connection is live.
Am a bit nervous about disabling antivirus - Eset - and/or firewall, but is this the way to go and which is best?

Thanks for this. Unfortunately, I can't restore what I don't have, i.e. iOS 5.0.1. Ran Apple diagnostics test and everything on iPad performed as it should. Then tried to update to 5.0.1 by disabling Eset internet security and firewall, as someone else suggested. This time, while iTunes was backing up content on the iPad, I got the message that an error occurred during backup (-37) and that if I continued, I'd lose all contents on the iPad.
