Hi Macdonlj - welcome to the forum! 
Your story sounds familiar - I'm retired and go to the YMCA - take along my iPod (which has my music) and my iPad (which has 'reading material') - for listening from the iPod (which would be the same as the iPad via Bluetooth), I use the Rocketfish BT headphones shown below; about $80 from my local Best Buy - a little cheaper at the Amazon MP - check HERE for prices and comments.
I've been pleased w/ this set - it's 'one size fits all' and for my head & neck, the set is comfortable (others have had negative comments) - there are certainly of other options, and I'm sure suggestions will be posted on favorites; the BT technology has been surprising robust.
