Ipad3 magnetic cover query

Hi,
I have just bought my first iPad, ipad3, and I am temporarily using my sons ipad2 cover. In the manual it says there is a setting in General settings to turn on/off the auto on/off when the magnetic cover is opened or closed. I can't find it in my General settings although my sons ipad2 has it. Help!

The line is titled "iPad Cover Lock/Unlock." On my ipad3, it's in the fifth block of text under the General tab in Settings. Hope that helps.

Marilyn

Thank you for replying Marilyn. It doesn't seem to be on mine. The fifth block of text has 3 items
Auto-Lock
Passcode Lock
Restrictions

On my sons ipad2 it's where you described it. Maybe a visit to the Apple Shop will be required.

Regards,

David

Huh. That is weird - and obviously not something I'm duplicating on my iPad3.

You are probably right, a trip to the Genius Bar may be in your future. A favor, though? Since I think we are simply missing some step, somewhere - when you do get it solved, can you come back and tell us the result? I'm most curious as to the reason...

Thanks.

Marilyn

Hi and welcome to the Forum!

I have heard that this setting doesn't appear until you fit a smart cover on the iPad, apparently the magnet activates the setting. An ipad 2's smart cover is a little different to the new iPad and the magnets are not in the same place. Locate where the magnet is on the cover and slide it down the side of the iPad (when held in portrait mode it will be on the right hand side, a couple of inches from the top). You can use another small magnet for this also. You'll know you've found the spot when the screen turns off, when you lift the magnet it should turn on again. Have a look in settings and see if the option is now there. Let us know if this has worked.

I don't use a smart cover on my iPad 3 and the setting appears in settings.

Hi Everyone,

Leelai and scifan57 were both correct but I didn't need to play around with the cover. My new cover arrived in the mail this morning, I slipped my iPad in ans hey presto, the setting appeared. Thank you all so much. David

Very cool - glad it got sorted so easily. And - I got to learn something new, also (that using the magnets activates the settings). Thanks, leelai!

And, thank you, David, for giving us the update. Always nice to hear back, especially positive outcomes. Appreciate it.

Marilyn
