Yes, there is - but only if you're jail broken. You can use icons, toggles and even,gestures to turn off the iPad. But, there is no alternative on a stock iPad. Sorry. Marilyn

cruiser111 iPF Novice Mar 22, 2014 #5 Settings/Accessibility/Assistive Touch does give a number of useful options. It puts a moveable icon on your screen no matter where you are. Whatever you do, don't touch 'Triple Click'! Did that and had "fun" getting back to normal actions.
