I went to ITunes to buy a song. I have not used it for quite a while and it seems that now I have to pay a subscription price to join? Is this correct? Guess I am out of touch.

The subscription price is for Apple Music, the music streaming service offered by Apple. You don't have to subscribe to anything to buy music from the iTunes store.

I did not think so as I never have before. I will try again as maybe I missed something. Thank you for the reply.

Make sure you are opening the iTunes Store app and not the Music app.

You can only purchase in the store app. You listen to purchased music and/or Apple Music (the subscription) in the Music app.
