I've Never Owned an iPAD - HELP!

LedaOhio

iPF Noob
I have between say $400 to $600 for a new iPAD and have NO CLUE about them.
I am a Lunix guru and custom build all my own boxes..

I have a windows box as well but, I want an iPAD the does not use iTUNES. Is there such an Animal? I really despise that APP..

I simply want an iPAD with sizable HD storage ??? and able to hook up via WiFi.. Or simply USB into my Box for transfers.
I am always at the doc's office etc.. and would love to have all my PDF books handy for reading material or videos as well.

The other main concern is, My Mother.. She is what I call a Sheeple and thinks that if it is not on the TV it must not be true. That or Dr. Phil, Judge Judy.. You get e idea..

I want to hand her the iPAd and say CLICK HERE..

Any help LINKS etc would be greatly appreciated.
I hate to buy without knowing a tad about it first.

Respecfully, LedaOhio

Hi and welcome to the Forum!

There are different storage size options available 16gb, 32gb, 64gb and now 128gb iPads available. It really depends on what you plan to use the iPad for to find the right size for you... Movies do take up the most room so if you plan on loading movies, it would make sense to buy a larger size.
It's also not until you do buy an iPad that you begin to realise just what an iPad is capable of......so keep this in mind also.
There are many ways to manage your iPad without having to deal with iTunes......you can backup your iPad with iCloud rather than iTunes and there are apps available to transfer data and photos between your PC and iPad.
All iPads connect through wifi but have a think about a cellular iPad......if you travel at all, it's great being able to use your iPad anywhere and at any time. The cellular iPad also gives you true GPS capability........you don't even need a charged sim to access this feature as the chip is built into the iPad itself.

HI,
was reading this reply and had a query. I currently have an iPad3 64 GB cellular. I was just about to upgrade to an iPad Air - Wifi
I use an offline Maps software for navigation (though it's primarily used on the iPhone, I do use the iPad for it sometimes)
It does not need a network connection to run.
My question is
Will I have a problem if i use a WiFi only iPad for navigation? I have never used cellular on the iPad and my existing iPad3 does not even have a SIM installed.
Would you recommend getting the cellular version of the Air? The only use of the cellular would be the "chip" for GPS
Thanks

That's really a personal choice but if you do want true GPS capability, then the cellular version is for you. I've had 3 iPads so far and all have been Cellular models. I use GPS quite regularly for off road driving and it has also come in handy when in a foreign city (saved me a couple of times quite recently) and I don't always have a charged sim, so for me it's very much worth it. I'm not one to use my iPhone for navigation because of the size of the screen, the iPad is the perfect size for this.

A wifi only iPad will not be reliable for GPS .....it will sometimes give a pretty good reading of your location but only where there are sufficient towers in the area to do so. So if this feature is important to you, then go for the cellular Air.......

I hope this helps!
