My wife keeps getting this message 'you have not backed up'. She was under the impression that if she plugged it into the mains and did not unlock it, the update would automatically begin. Is this incorrect, a simple idiots guide would be appreciated. I know very little about iPads, so I am not much help.

Kind regards.

Here's where you can get the official owners manual from Apple:

So are you trying to backup to iCloud or to a local PC?

It has to be locked, plugged in and connected to Wi-Fi. iCloud backup has to be enabled as well. You can check this in Settings - iCloud - Backup.

If you're plugged into the charger and on WiFi and there's an availible iOS update, the update will automatically update but will not install itself. To install the update go to Settings>General>Software Update and tap the install button. To back up the iPad you either have to do it by connecting to iTunes on your computer and clicking on the backup button on the summary page for your connected device. You can also go to Settings>iCloud>Backup on the iPad and turn on automatic backups after signing into your iCloud account.

Many thanks for your replies. I have had a look at the manual and Mini is now plugged in, locked and hopefully backing up to iCloud.

The last recorded backup was 25th Jan, will see what it says tonight.

Prompt replies appreciated.

Mine almost never backs up even though it is plugged in and locked. It just doesn't work. If I want to back it up I have to do it manually.

You can always force a backup in Settings > iCloud > Backup, and tapping the Backup Up Now button at the bottom of the page (iOS 7 might be slightly different).

Make sure you have a good internet connection, some time, and plenty of battery. Better yet, have it plugged into the charger.
