Losing purchased books!!

Hi, just joined....... Can i know if i would lose the books i purchased if i update my ipad? I have never backed up nor done a sync, all purchases done on wireless. I tried to download some free apps and could not cos they require ios4.2 and above, hence my quest to update to be ios compliant! See my big issue is..... I backed up but my over 100 purchased books didnt backup + when i try to update it gives the prompt all purchases would be lost!!!!!!!! How can i do this without losing my books both read and unread?

You'll need to backup your iPad with a PC and the latest version of iTunes. Then you can update the software and restore your iPad and all your purchases will be back.
