Mail App freezes

Today suddenly my Mail App has frozen. I have 65 messages waiting but cannot display them. "Edit" does nothing. No reaction. I tried "Write", got a message form and now can't get rid of it. Nothing seems to work. Everything else works fine. All other icons OK but mail seems frozen.
Anyone any clues ?

Have you tried force closing the mail app? To do so, double tap the home button or do a four finger upswipe to reveal the multi tasking bar. Swipe up on the thumbnail above the mail app icon, then double tap the home button to go back to the home screen. If that doesn't work, try resetting your iPad. Press and hold both the power and home buttons until the Apple logo appears, then release both buttons and wait for the phone to restart.

Let us know if either method worked.
