Mail insists I have an unread email, but I don't

My name is Pennelli and I am an ibook user.
I would like a SIMPLE way to delete messages that are unread after a given time period.
I keep receiving a message that I have unread mail, but I went back for three months and I don't! I looked in preferences and elsewhere to no avail.

This is happening to me once in a while using Google with the imap protocol. Generally, all I have to do is close Mail from the task bar (double-click the home button, press and hold the Mail icon in the task bar )...

Seems to happen when I directly delete a message without reading it first. I also found that some emails are still unread in my google inbox even if I don't see them in Mail.

Have you tried to reboot the iPad, this may help resync the emails...
