What if any maintenance does an iPad require to keep it running in tip top performance , thanks Simon

Other than checking the points and changing the oil regularly, the only other thing I can recommend is to reboot every now and then to free up ram.

In addition, Apple suggests taking the battery through a full charge cycle monthly, i.e. letting the battery 'run down' and then fully recharging - Info HERE, if interested -
