Maps for navigation

Can I use iPad as a navigator by downloading maps which can be used offline ..?

Some navigation apps will work offline and allow you to download the maps in advance. My favorite one is Navigon.

Yes, where the app requires GPS access to get an accurate current position a wifi only iPad is not helpful.

It is my understanding that there is NO GPS in a wifi only iPad.

I'm looking for an app that you can download worldwide maps and use offline. Google maps has good coverage, but I haven't found anywhere you can download and use offline. Navicon looks good, but typical Garmin in that you're stuffed if you don't live in Europe or North America.

I'm using NavFree, and am pretty pleased so far. It allows you to download only the states/regions you need, which saves on storage. It also quite well with my Bluetooth GPS unit while in the car.

I'm using this app and I like. Other very good is Waze.
