Microsoft’s Claims for Surface Display Superiority Debunked by Expert

AppleInsider reports that a display expert has found issue with Microsoft’s recent claim that its Surface tablet would have a “sharper†display than the iPad. In order to see if this was in fact the case, President of DisplayMate Technologies, Raymond Soneira, tested the iPad 2 and current iPad in contrast with an Asus netbook, which he says is comparable to the Surface RT, which has yet to be released. Reporting on his findings, Soneira said “the Windows ClearType 768p display on the Asus Netbook was significantly sharper than the iPad 2 768p display, but also significantly less sharp than the new iPad 3 1536p display.†He went on to say that although it is still possible that the Microsoft Surface RT Tablet will have a better performing display than the Asus Netbook used in the test, he still does not think it will be sharper than the iPad 3.

I called "Bunk" on that claim in another forum yesterday. My "bunk" was based on the obvious need for MS to try to steal some thunder from Apple to boost sales of Surface as well as the significantly less resolution in the Surface screen. Ah, using fonts alone gives rise to a sharper screen and you don't need more ppi? Yeah, right! Tell us anything.

I don't think there is a tab out there or about to be released that can beat the 2048 X 1536 RD display that the iP3 has. The new 8.9 Kindle Fire HD will come close with a 1900 X 1200 display but that's about it.
