Hi Bill and welcome to the forum. Do you mean it turns off after you have not used it for a while?
If so you can adjust that time interval in Settings:

Otherwise, you'll need to provide more info. Is there something you are doing when that happens, like does that happen with a particular app?
Try this first, a tidy up of your iPad internals, causing no harm.

Simultaneously hold down the On/Off and Home buttons until the screen blacks out. Keep holding both until the white Apple logo appears and then let both go. Then wait until your wallpaper appears. Restart your iPad.

Your iPad is a very reliable piece of equipment. There will be an answer to a "problem" such as yours.
