It seems clear that MobileMe will become free in some capacity, and they are now offering 60 day free trials.
My question is what people feel about this App/etc compared to Dropbox, Evernote, etc for their iPad2 or if that's not a fair comparison.
Cheers!
As someone else stated that is not really a fair comparison as it is only considering iDisk Vs Dropbox etc.
MobileMe is much more than that. With two macs and two iOS devices I absolutely love the syncing the MM gives me. It is even better when you have more than one Mac: can sync your settings, keychain data (passwords and whatnot), dock items, bookmarks, mail accounts, and more.
When I bought my MacBook Air last week I was not going to be home for a few hours. I tethered the Air to my iPhone 4's 3G connection and had it all setup and synced in like 20 minutes.
But iDisk? Rarely use it.
I suspect, as others have noted, there will be a free level of MM and then perhaps a paid version with more features. Already Find my iPhone/iPad is free to all and that was once only possible with a paid MM account. So in a sense a part of it is already free.
Ironically I am probably going to start using iDisk more often now. I am going to use it to store stuff I don't need all of the time on my Air.
My hunch is that iDisk will be part of the paid part of MM, but will be increased from 10GB to 50 or more GB.
While dropbox is free for 2GB and maybe a few more hundred MB if you refer, it is pretty steep IMO to get even the first tier to get more storage ($100 for 50 GB).
It also depends on how you intend to use it. Seems to me dropbox is really good at keeping a set of files/folders synced to the cloud from one or more computers. That is almost like a backup solution... very useful if that is what you want.
But I mainly just want storage... So thinking iDisk might be better... assuming the storage size goes up for paid users.
Finally, MobileMe can me had for around $50 on ebay. I have never paid $100 to Apple directly.
