How do you activate subtitles when watching film with foreign language involved?

It should work without having to activate anything. I just watched part of IP Man on both my iPhone 4 and on my IPad 2, and the subtitles work without me changing any settings. Which movie are you trying to watch? I can test it out on my Idevices if you'd like.
