First off, hi, and welcome to the forum (from a fellow retired USAF person)!

The first thing you need to do with that iPad is plug it into iTunes (ensure you've downloaded the latest version, which is 10.5 and available here: Apple - iTunes - Download iTunes Now). It will take some time to download iTunes, but it's what you'll need to get that iPad fired up.

When you plug it in, iTunes will initiate an update, because Apple just updated to a newer version of the software for the iPad (iOS 5). Just keep following all the prompts and then you're iPad will be in good working order.

This will take some time (1 -2 hours), mainly because of the update. But, when you are done, you'll have a lovely new "toy" to play with!

Good luck, please let us know how you get on and do ask more questions - should you need to.

Hi there and welcome.

If you got your iPad from an Apple store you have a fighting chance that it may already be on iOS 5, in which case once you follow Marilyn's instructions (which are always good) you may be up and running in no time at all.

101 degrees eh! I think I'll join you over there, it's cold here!

There is lots of good advice and info on here plus plenty of members all too willing to help with any problems.

Remember, search is your friend.......and please don't forget to read the rules http://www.ipadforums.net/forum-rules-help-info/2119-forum-rules-everybody-please-read.html

Finally, if you still haven't had enough, how about a video explaining about our other forums (note:you may want to play this at half speed but hey, why shouldn't Phil be excited about our forums!)

Good to hear from you. You’ll find a whole bunch of iPad enthusiasts in this Forum who are only too willing to help other iPad owners and to hear of their experiences. Don’t be afraid to post any questions you may have or use the ‘Search’ button near the top of the Forum web page. I usually find I discover one new interesting and useful piece of information about my iPad every day - and often not even what I was looking for!!

Hope to hear from you soon with your thoughts about the iPad.

Have fun and enjoy your iPad

If you don’t already have it you can download a copy of the iPad manual for free.
