I got an iPad2 for Christmas and had some questions and thought what better place to go than iPad Forums?

Anyway, I was always told to delete files from iTunes to clear space on my laptop hard drive. Problem is if I delete the books, movies, and music from my iTunes they will be removed from my iPad2 when I sync any new books/movies. So....how do I keep the books, movies, etc...on my iPad2 from being removed if I remove them from iTunes. I have iTunes set up to NOT auto-sync but that's not going to fix my problem. Any suggestions? Thanks!

If I may be so bold ... do NOT delete files from iTunes! Because what you've discovered is what will happen - syncing your iPad2 to iTunes (after removing your media from iTunes) will cause iTunes to remove the media from the iPad. You cannot stop this behavior if you wish to sync new media to your iPad. Cannot.

There is only a one-way sync and that's from iTunes to the iPad. So, unfortunately, you cannot save any hard drive space by deleting iTunes media ... unless you wish to delete that media forever.

Hope this clarifies.

And in addition to Marilyn's excellent advice, if you are concerned about space you can move your iTunes content to an external hard drive as long as it is still mapped by iTunes. I have done this as I have a large music collection, so I just created an alias for iTunes using my Mac.
