Scifan's post is absolutely correct however, there are some workarounds, certain types of data can be stored externally, such as movies, photos, etc. As these types of file can take up a lot of space there may be some mileage in looking at the options, such as NAS drives, AirStash, iUSBport (formally CloudFTP), etc and you can find out about all these and more in the iPad-connect section of the forums here

Remember, search is your friend.
