I stumbled across this site while I was looking for information about the ipad 64gb wifi & 3G. I'm preparing to go on a mega hike from my home town in the UK through Belgium, France & Switzerland to arrive sore footed in Italy a few months later. To lessen the carry weight I thought I could perhaps use an ipad as a GPS and to communicate with everyone at home. Having never used Apple before this is all new to me also I have no technical knowledge at all - I remember "adding machines" when they had a handle to pull down to input the amount and haven't progressed much since!
From the info I've read on the forum it seems that I can download maps before I set off & then use the ipad (without the cost of having the 3G conneced) to navigate. Has anyone on the forum had experience of doing this and if so would you advise me to forget the downloads & just use the real time GPS with the 3G connected?
By the way -great site ...if a bit technical for me!
