Hi there and welcome to forum!!
Regarding your question, if you take your 4 fingers and swipe the screen left or right, it should return you to an app that you were previously at. Also, if you need to return to the main page, just press the "home" button which is the circular button close to the bottom of the screen when holding the iPad in portrait. Hope this helps!

The iPad is a learning curve when you first get one but don't worry after playing with it you'll soon start getting the hang of it. Below you will find lots of info to get you started.
