Hi there--check to see what your side switch setting is switched onto.
Go to Settings on your iPad:
Tap on General and scroll down to the "Use Side Switch" box and unselect the mute option.
Now the mute button can than be accessed in the multi-task bar by double clicking the home button or doing a 4-finger swipe upward to reveal your active apps. Swipe your finger to the right, until you reach the volume panel. There, you can control volume.
