You cannot save documents on the home screen they have to be in an app. You could download iBooks (free) then email PDFs, open them on your iPad by pressing them, a box will pop up to open in, then select iBooks.
Goodreader is another great app for this.

Hi newcp99-hi there and welcome from Michigan!! I, agree with Leelai-I use Goodreader as well. I like this app, because I can annotate the PDF with underlines, highlights and personal notes on the sides of the margin. It is a very useful app and can be saved in the annotated form to others. It's worth checking out. Good luck and enjoy!!
