Notes - markup not working?

iPad Pro 10.5 13.3.1. If I open an existing note with text in it and select markup with my Apple Pencil nothing happens. If I generate a new note the Pencil works fine. Is this correct? Only draw with Apple Pencil is turned on in settings.

To start marking up an existing note, tap or start drawing below the existing text with the Apple Pencil. A seperate area for drawing will appear. There will be line with a drag bar betwen them that you can resize the drawing area with.

You do not need to open the mark up tool first, though it may take more than one tap of the pencil.

If you tap with your finger below the area you are drawing it a new text area will appear.

Lines will appear between the text and drawing areas. These let you adjust space for additional drawing or text. Drag the small dot on the left of the line.

Thanks for your help. I’ve just tried this and yes that works. This is not markup though to my mind. What I wanted to do was markup some text by underling or circling it with the pencil in red for example like I have done on PDF files.

Understood. That can’t be done in Notes. Well, it can, but only on a PDF or image that you import to notes.

For that kind of work I use Documents by Readdle or Notability; depending on the situation. Goodnotes is another great choice (so I read).
