Promotional codes, HowTo ?

How do I put in promotional codes and NOT sticking myself with payment by accident ?

Press the Featured tab when in the App Store. Scroll down to the bottom and you will see Redeem, press this and you will get a box to input your code. There is no need to worry about being charged for an app using this method.

I could not find featured tab. But I managed to stumble there anyway.

Between title and published date is the company publishing, then a right pointing arrow. Click that. New page opens with all their products. At bottom are two buttons. Rt button is your login email addy. Left is "redeem" button. Click that, window pops up, enter code, ONCE. Download starts. Don't enter more codes here despite prompt. They're just wasted.
Start over with new selected product to enter another code. Codes seem to not be limited to the first person.
