Put single episodes of purchased TV series on iPad

I have recently been given an iPad and would like to put single episodes of TV series, purchased on iTunes on my Mac, but can't see how to do that. I tried specifying it on iTunes on my Mac but I can't find them on my iPad. When I went to iTunes on my iPad it tried to download the whole series instead of just the episode I wanted. Obviously that was too big a file so I came on to this forum to learn how to delete these. Thanks for great answer on that - I am finding the iPad most unintuitive in comparison to other Apple products and I have been using Macs for 20+ years!
