Question about github.com repositories...

Hey,

Can you add any of these repositories to the sources in Cydia? I tried adding a couple of them but it didn't work and I was wondering if none of them can be added or if some of them can and I just need to know how to tell the difference. Does the reason the ones I tried to add failed have something to do with legacy?

Thanks for any help.

Github repos are not the same as Cydia repos. Git is a distributed source code (or actually "any file") version control system, typically used for development, and especially useful for open source / team development. I have all my development project hosted there.

Typically, if you are looking at a jailbreak tweak in Github, you are looking at the source code for that tweak. You would need to clone the git repository from Github onto your PC and then compile the tweak using development tools.
In most cases you should also find that the finished and compiled tweak is also available in one or more Cydia repos somewhere on the interwebz, since relatively few jailbreakers have the capability to compile and install their own tweaks from source code ;)

Hope that helps.

OK,

Thanks. I didn't know most of that. What repos do you use in Cydia?

You should be fine with all the repos that are supplied. 99% of legitimate tweaks and apps appear in there. There is a list of alternative additional ones on Cydia and you are OK to add those normally. But its unlikely you'll find much which is really compelling for the iPad.

As a rule of thumb, the only time you need alternative repos are for beta / pre-release tweaks. Developers usually give you details of those if you are testing out stuff.
At iPadForums, if we ever post details of a tweak or app that does not appear in the standard repos we will always tell you which one to add.

Hope that clarifies :)

The only one that is not on Cydia buy is a must is the one that has xbmc in my opinion. That application let you watch nearly any content better than on the pc and it made me forget completely about not having flash.

My only question would be what could I use it for? I mean what media is there that you can't find in a form that's h.264 encoded? And if there are such things, do they cost money, or what?

What do you use it for, and what kinds of media is there available that it could be used for?

What I used it for is to watch online content. Instead of going to webpages like justin, 1channel ,bbc player or others I install the relevant add on. It basically brings all the content together in one place, plus without ads and with a lot of flexibility in regards to image and sound manipulation.

So does the package cost money or is it free? What repository is it in?

They are all free. If you go to xmc.org you can find the repo for the app there.

Umm, I don't know what's up with that website but let's just say I tried to go to it and it didn't work.

I found the repo at the website. I installed it on my iPad. It looks like it might have a lot of potential just from the brief look I took at it last night. I was kind of intrigued by the program "romcollectionbrowser" because it said it could launch any ROM if you had the .exe file of the emulator that plays it. I don't know how far that would work with an iPad though. I was thinking about putting pcsx2 on my iPad and downloading a PS2 iso and trying it out, but I figure that won't work like I would want it too. Anyway, I'd like to know where to get some free media that would only be playable on my iPad with this new package.

I'm having trouble deciding how to use this package... It seems like to me that it has a lot of potential for uses I couldn't normally take advantage of, but I don't know how to go about it...

I never got the games to work. Start installing addons from repos preinstalled.

It is not straightforward but deffo worth it. I also installed and uninstalled it a couple of times until I figured it out.

Focus on the video add ons first, once you manage that you can move to the others.
