AppleInsider reports today that Random House, the biggest book publisher on earth, could be about to join Apple’s iBookstore. Until now, Random House has been the one major publisher that has held back from joining Apple’s epublishing party, with its five biggest rivals (HarperCollins, Hachette, Penguin, Macmillan and Simon & Shuster) already involved. According to AppleInsider, Random House made a statement to the media on Monday, where it said that it has agreed to “the agency model for e-book sales†in the US from today.

“The agency model guarantees a higher margin for retailers than did our previous sales terms,†Random House said in the statement. “We are making this change both as an investment in the successful digital transition of our existing partners and in order to give us the opportunity to forge new retail relationships.â€

As AppleInsider points out, this makes it much more likely that Random House will now team up with Apple in its iBookstore. Currently, iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users can only buy and download Random House books via the iOS Kindle app.
