I live in South Africa and have also registered my IPad as such. I heard today that it is best to register it under a USA account as there are way more free apps available to choose from . Could this be true?

Yes this is very true the US app store has many more apps but you can open an account with that store also if you need to. You will need an US ITunes gift card which you will be able to buy over the net and as you only need the number on it, this can be emailed to you. You will need another email address though, but gmail are easy to create. Have a look here:-
