I downloaded the Apple remote app. It told me to turn on home share which I have done. Then it said to connect to my computer and type in the pass code given on the app which I have done. Once I'd done this I had my iTunes library on my iPad. Great I thought, it works. Until I disconnected from my computer, now the app can't find my library. I thought the whole point was that I could view my library without being connected to my computer. Am I doing something wrong?

Go into your video app and click on the "Share" tab. Tap the Library name. You are now able to share all your videos. In the iPod app click on the "Libary" icon (the house with the note on it) and tap the "Name Library" you want to share and the music in the shared library is now available to you. Browse and listen to the music in your shared library.

iTunes must be running on the host computer for the remote app to work. It will not launch by itself.

BTW, the Remote app does not play music on the device. It is a way to remotely control iTunes on the computer.

Thanks, I did wonder that because when I tested it when it was connected to my computer the music played through my computer. What a pointless app that is then!

Not pointless. I like being able to change music and volume without crossing the room. Some people have their computers connected to entertainment centers. It's useful for that too, though I'm more likely to use the iPhone version unless I am already using the iPad at the moment.

HomeSharing is what you are looking for. It does not require a separate app. You do it using the iPod app.

Once again, iTunes must be running on the host computer. But the music will play on the device this way, not the computer.
