Hi! the foundations I support are generally out in the field and occasionally I need to support their iPads (and iPhones) over the phone.

it really would be great to see their "desktop" - is there any reliable means of doing this without resorting to jailbreaking?

does anyone know if it's even possible given the current iOS API?

There is no way to do this using a non-jailbroken iPad. The APIs for this simply don't exist in iOS.

It is not possible without jailbreaking, though if they have two devices you could probably have them FaceTime you and point the back camera at the other device.

Huh - that's not a bad idea. I'll give that a shot next time.

I sure can't wait for ARD/VNC for iOS!
