Retrieval of documents/pix from SkyDrive

Hi to all,

I use SkyDrive for the storage of practically everything on both my iPhone and iPad 2. I've done this so I could free up some space and not store everything on both of my devices. One questions, that I hope someone can answer, is how do I download an item (let's say a picture) from SkyDrive back to my iPad 2, so I can use it?

I hope everyone is enjoying the Holiday Season. And as always, thanks in advance for your help.

I don't use SkyDrive, but it is probably similar to other cloud storage apps like DropBox, Box, and GoogleDrive.

If that is the case, you would open the SkyDrive app, go to the file you want, select it, then use the share/open In feature via the icon (usually a box with an arrow coming out of it) or some other menu or side bar. This will let you open/save the file in any apps you have loaded on the iPad that are compatible.

In the case of a picture, you should see the option to save it to the Camera Roll, at the very least.

Some apps may have the ability to connect to SkyDrive built in. In those cases you'd have to set your account up in those apps. You have to read the app's description to see if it supports SkyDrive directly.

Twerppoet's response is right on the money. I chip in here only because I also use SkyDrive to move stuff from PC to iPad and vice versa. Move whatever you want synced from your PC to your iPad by copy/paste or drag and drop into your SkyDrive folder on the PC. then when you open the SkyDrive app on your iPad (which you downloaded free from the Apple store), that item will be synced into that SkyDrive app.

Yep, I spoke too soon. I uploaded a lot of short video files from my iPad 2 to SkyDrive, and now want to download them in order to make an iMovie project. When I click on the "box with the arrow", the only option it gives me is to "rename the file". However, when I click on the same icon relative to a photo, it gives me the option to download it.

Any ideas?

I'm sorry Cory, but I have never done it with videos so regret I can't contribute further on this. But I am most surprised that there should be a difference. My understanding is that ANY data item dropped into the PC's SkyDrive file would sync over to the iPad's SkyDrive file. May be worth fiddling with a bit more.....

As I've said before, I don't use Skydrive; however, if it is like the DropBox app you will have to wait until the entire video downloads into the app before it will offer the download (save to Photos) options. For longer videos, especially on slower connections, this can take a several minutes.

Well, after trying to monkey with this, I have yet to have any luck. I tried "giving it some time" to load, but I'm still only given the option to rename the video, nothing else. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. I've upload quite. Few video clips, and am wondering if it was all for nought.

Worst case, you can use an app like GoodReader to download the clips to the iPad again, and then upload them to DropBox, then download (Save) them to the Photos app from there. You can set up direct access to both SkyDrive and DropBox in GoodReader.

Unfortunately GoodReader won't save video back to the Photos app. I tried.

Unless you have a computer or laptop, in which case it would be a lot easiest to use that.
