Rotation

I have spent the last two weeks off and on trying to get my ipad 2 to rotate. I have tried everything I can find. It was locked in the portrait mode, then it started rotating for about a day, then locked again. The only thing I haven't done is to a reset, I don't want to lose all my settings. Does anyone have any more ideas?

Sorry if these seems like silly questions, but lets eliminate the simple stuff first... Have you tried turning off the rotation lock via the bottom toolbar? Double click the home button, and scroll to the far left - does the rotation icon have a lock picture in it? If so, press this to unlock.
Also, in settings/general, is 'use side switch to:' set to Mute or Lock Rotation. That determines the use of your black switch on the side of your ipad, which may be on/off.
Lastly, some Apps don't have a rotation feature built in. Make sure you're not testing all this while in an app.

After reading everything that apple suggests and that being one of them, yes I have done those things. There is nothing that I can find that even remotely suggest a lock anywhere.

Tried a full reboot? Not just a restart, but shutting right down? (Hold the sleep and home buttons together for about 20 seconds, ignore the 'slide to switch off', and let it shut down. If this doesn't work, you may need to try the Reset.

Yes tried the full reboot, if I reset will that mean will need to reset ALL my setting?

Well, you need to backup everything to a pc or the cloud (or both).

Then, either take it to an apple store or do this yourself. Wipe and restore. This is what apple will do after they do all the stuff you said you did above (they will do it again before you can get a replacement --- so be SURE to get a good backup or two so you can recover.

I had this problem almost a year ago with my iPad 2. After doing all this stuff myself, I took it to them. They did the same stuff. I had a new iPad in less than 24 hours after the problem first occurred.

Best to you on your repair.

Edit: they did not do a restore. They asked me if I had a backup and then did the wipe. Problem persisted.
