Safari Menu Cancel

Is there a way to cancel the drop down menu in Safari. When I go to certain sites and hit the drop down menu and then want to get out of it I have to select a link and then go back to get out of it. If I hit the menu button again it is like a link and just shuttles it to another part of the site. Then I have to hit the back button. And selecting another drop down menu just opens that one. Still leaves me with one open.
