Safari tab width

The tabs in my Safari all of a sudden expanded to "max width", meaning that one tab is the size of my current horizontal width and two tabs take up the size of half the width, etc. this happened suddenly while surfing and there's no way I've found to make the tabs behave normally. Restarting the device did not help. Any ideas?

With respect to your question, that's how Safari on my iPad always looks. As you add more tabs they shorten up, but AFAIK that's normal.

One tab open:

Multiple tabs open:

Welcome again and enjoy!

Um... Bummer... I see it now, searching Google for iOS 5 images ... I could swear they were shorter to begin with, but obviously I mix up with two other browsers installed. Sorry for my mistake.

Not a problem at all. Believe me, I know that "I could swear it was different!" experience.
