I've just purchased the new iPad 2 and love it to bits.
I've obtained an iPad Camera Connection Kit to be able to download photos from my external DSLR camera where I take photo's in the RAW format. The iPad reads and displays them very well. In the next couple of months I'm off overseas and would like to send the photo's to family as I'm traveling from city to city. The only setback is the size of the photos with each being around 15 MB. To send a handfull is quite a lot of data and the time taken to send especially in slow speed WiFi zones is going to be challanging.

Would anyone know of how I can convert the photo's to a smaller size before sending but keep the original size in memory? I'm quite happy if they are reformatted to jpg or pdf.

If it's like the Iphone when you send emal with pictures in it

The Ipad will ask you which format to send the picture with the size next to it in paranthesis

You're right - it would be challenging or even impossible to send photos this large by email. Most service providers have a limit on the size of the attachment that they'll allow and most/many would not allow a 15 MB attachment. If you're able to see the existing imported photos in RAW then you must be using an app to display them. Does that app have a conversion facility? I say this because, even if you were able to email the original RAW images to family and friends would they all have the capability to display them? As you say, a conversion to JPEG seems the best way forward but I'm surprised that the current app that you're using to display the images doesn't have that capability.

When you compose the email, click on 'Cc/Bcc From:', when you tap it, it will expand and lets you choose the size of the image (small, medium, large and actual size) (Note: Add the image first to the email, then set the size)

Thanks guys for the prompt reply to the post. I'm still at work so I'll give it a try when I get home. I'm a bit embarrassed I havent tried all the above suggestions before posting the question. I just got it last weekend and haven't had too much time to work out the ins and outs. What a great forum to get such quick answers. Keep up the good work.

OK - sorting photos....there's no way on the iPad to create different photos within the 'Photo' app itself. If you want to create different folders in your Photos app then you have to do this via a sync with iTunes. In other words, organise all your photos into the folders you want to see them in on your PC or Mac and then sync the photos with your iPad using iTunes. The folder structure that you established on the PC will transfer to the iPad. If the iPad had allowed you to create folders locally, there would have been 'compatibility issues' when syncing with your PC.

If you really need to organise photos locally on your iPad, then you could use GoodReader, which allows you to organise files and folders in a more-or-less infinitely configurable and flexible manner. From within GoodReader you can open any file in any app that supports it.

In response to your second question......

If you have a specific problem, then you can either post a question or use the Search button near the top of the Forum web page.

If you want to post a problem, you’ll probably want to either append your question to an existing thread if your problem is related to the topic being discussed in that thread, or start a new discussion (thread). To do that, you need to navigate back to the ‘iPad Forum’ page (button near the top of the Forum web page), then choose a discussion area that you think most suits the problem you want to discuss - say ‘iPad DiY’, click to enter that area and then you’ll see a button ‘Start New Thread’. You can click on that and enter a title for your thread and the usual text box where you can type the details of your problem.

It makes sense to use a thread title that’s as descriptive as possible. So I wouldn’t call a thread ‘I have a problem’ because no one scanning through the thread will know what the problem is or whether they can help and, since there are so many posts made each day, no one has time to read them all.

So, instead, make the title of the thread as specific as possible - ‘iPad screen goes blank every 5 seconds’, for example would be better (though not as good as it could be, I have to admit) and then give as much detail of the problem as you can.

But don’t be afraid to post - all the Forum members are really nice and the Moderators keep them under control and make sure they’re well behaved and polite - well, most of the time!!

But just enjoy your iPad. Like any new product, they'll be 'issues' that will arise - first piece of advice, don't panic and don't do anything rash. I've read of people who have restored their iPads - generally a last resort - when the problem was far far simpler.
