Slow start up

I've had iPad 2 for over a year now. Suddenly a few weeks after upgrading to new operating system it won't always turn on. I get no response to pressing the home button. I have to press the button on the side that puts it to sleep then an apple logo will come on (sometimes after several tries and moments of pure panic). Then it's a few minutes before the iPad turns on for use. I'm worried about this? What's the fix? I have closed all apps and I really don't have much stored on it at all. I'm a novice user.

Did you do a reset after the upgrade? It's a recommended step just to allow everything to settle in nicely. It seems to be turning itself off, try a reset and see how you go.
Hold the power off button and the home button simultaneously, keep holding them in and you will see the power off slide appear and disappear, wait until you see the Apple logo appear before releasing the buttons. It will take a little longer for your iPad to start.
