Smart cover auto lock inquiry

Hey guys, I would like some advice regarding to the iPad smart cover auto lock feature. I didn't use the original cover and I used some sort like fabric type smart cover. And when I carry or hold my iPad while walking it doesn't attach to my iPad and the cover will somehow lock and unlock my iPad. My question here is... Does this will damage my iPad if it happens frequently? Or it only drains my battery life?

Definitely drain the battery.

It drains the battery..but you can turn this feature off

Turning off this feature means going manual. I'd rather do those glue type Velcro to hold the cover in place.
