Do you know if apple is gonna make cases that protect the back of the ipad 2 compatible with the smart cover ?

Won't happen. Not from Apple anyways.

There are various third party covers with SmartCover functionality, which still protect the back though

Agreed. Apple probably won't, but as mentioned 3rd party ones are slowly coming available. Below is a link to a list I have been compiling and trying to keep up to date. Hope it helps you find what you are looking for.
