Since the update our work iPad is no longer as efficient as it was.

When we are in a word document we often want to use the camera to take a photo relating to what we are reporting and then go back into the document.

Since the update, whenever he switch from document to the desktop, use the camera and then go back to My Docs it doesn't open up the document we were using, but goes back to the directory again and we have to search for the document we were using, and start again.

Is there a setting to put this the way it was before the update?

Chances are it will require the developer to update their app. The ability to switch between apps should work as before for the user, but apps may require an update to be compatible.

Deleting and re-installing the app might works as well, but you'll want to make sure you have current copies of all your documents stored somewhere else, not in the app.

Another possibility, go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and make sure your My Docs app is turned on. It shouldn't make a difference, but it's worth a try.

But before those things, try the fixes below, if you have not already done so.

The Usual Fixes

When you have problems with an app it's a good idea to clear it from RAM.

Close/Clear the app:

iOS 6: With the problem app closed, double tap on the Home button to get the multitask bar. Tap and hold on any icon in the bar until they jiggle, then tap the minus sign on the problem app.

iOS 7: Double tap the Home button to get the multitasking display. Swipe up on the problem app's thumbnail image (not the icon).

If that does not work try a restart,

Restart: Hold down the power button until the power off slider appears. Slide it off. When the iPad finishes shutting down, hold down the power button again until the Apple logo appears. Apple recommends you restart the iPad at least once a month.

and then a reset if that does not work.

Reset: Hold down the power and home buttons until the Apple logo appears. The iPad will reboot. This usually takes a bit longer than a restart.
