Synching Music with latest itunes upgrade

Yesterday I downloaded the latest upgrade for itunes. Over the passed two years I had gathered together about 1800 songs by copying my old CD's onto itunes and also purchasing songs via the itunes store. Once I had downloaded the latest itunes update I lost all the music that hadn't been purchased via itunes. All these songs had been residing happily on my ipad and my ipod touch for a couple of years now - can anyone tell me why this has happened and if its possible to get it back? Or is it lost to cyber space for ever? I am not that computer savvy so if you've got any ideas you may have to keep them fairly basic.
